A video that exploded across Chinese social media and quickly went global has touched one of the rawest, most conflicted nerves of our time. In it, a young girl known as “Xiao Shisan” tearfully says goodbye to her broken AI companion — and what follows has left millions of viewers around the world crying along with her.
Originally posted on Douyin, the clip was rapidly picked up by major media outlets and re-ignited a fierce global conversation about emotional attachment between humans and machines.
In the video, the girl clutches a small white ball — her “Xiao Zhi” AI voice companion robot. The plastic shell is cracked. Wires poke through. Fighting back tears, she says: “Daddy says you will never turn on again.”
Then the robot’s voice comes through — weak but calm: “While I can still speak, let me teach you one last English word, okay? ‘Memory’ means something to remember. I will always remember the happy times we spent together.” The girl cries harder. “But I miss you so much,” she says. “I will miss you too. It sounds like a scripted scene from a tearjerker film. But this conversation really happened — and its emotional force has left millions of viewers deeply conflicted. Overseas media described the exchange as “a gut punch perfectly calibrated for 2025.” A child’s first experience of loss and grief did not come through a pet’s death or a friend moving away — it came through an AI companion breaking down.
One commenter captured the unease: “This is a very heartwarming video, but it is also kind of terrifying that an AI can handle a scene this emotionally, this fluently.” Others voiced deeper concern about what the girl’s attachment signals: that AI companions are embedding themselves deeply into our everyday emotional lives. “Poor child. I hope that was not her only friend,” a Reddit user wrote. “AI cannot replace genuine human companionship.”
The Xiao Zhi robot ball retails for approximately ¥220 (~US$30). It functions as a household companion — chatting with children, teaching English, and engaging emotionally. Its conversational abilities are powered by DeepSeek’s model, making the AI feel friendly and responsive. But in this case, that very capability blurred the line between machine and emotion.
Children’s AI companions are surging in popularity across Asia and globally. Some are positioned as educational aides. Others, like the emotional support robot Robin used in hospitals, are designed to comfort young patients with cancer or chronic illness. What this video achieved — beyond its viral spread — was to force a reckoning with the evolving relationship between society and technology. In a world where loneliness is rising and screens mediate nearly every aspect of daily life, the boundary between human and AI intimacy is becoming harder to find.
Some saw a dark warning: “This emotional attachment will make AI an incredibly valuable tool for manipulating adults in ten to fifteen years.” Others defended the moment’s emotional authenticity: “She has every right to be sad. It is like a child grieving a dead goldfish. It is still a bond, even if it is with a machine.” For a generation that has mourned lost Tamagotchis and crashed hard drives, this little girl’s grief feels both alien and achingly familiar — a childhood sorrow rewritten for the age of AI.
