In the early hours today, the long-awaited LEGO Smart Play System — alongside its core component, the Smart Brick — was officially unveiled. At CES 2026 in Las Vegas, LEGO Group Chief Product and Marketing Officer Julia Goldin and Creative Play Lab lead Tom Donaldson presented the complete system to the media. The event showcased not only the first wave of Smart Brick-enabled LEGO Star Wars products launching in March, but also multiple real-world play scenarios. LEGO followed up with an official press release and dedicated webpage, describing the system as “the most significant innovation since the introduction of the minifigure in 1978.”
Screen-Free: Making Bricks Truly Come Alive
The core design goal of the Smart Play System is to give LEGO sets life — entirely without a screen. The system is fully self-contained and requires no phone app for updates. All sound assets and behavior logic are stored in Tags and smart minifigures. The Smart Brick serves as the brain of the system, receiving information and generating responses in real time. And crucially, the Smart Brick is standardized — regardless of which LEGO theme you buy, it recognizes and is compatible with tags and minifigures from other themes.
A Decade in the Making: The Hidden Technology
LEGO revealed that the Smart Play concept began nearly ten years ago. The company assembled a cross-disciplinary team spanning video games, electronic engineering, industrial design, UX, computer science, and acoustics to bring it to life.
Invisible Technology and Wireless Charging. To preserve the hands-on building experience, electronic components were engineered to be remarkably compact. The Smart Brick contains a built-in lithium battery and supports recharging via a wireless charging dock that can power multiple bricks simultaneously.
Patent Positioning System. This is one of the system’s most impressive innovations. The Smart Brick houses a three-dimensional array of induction coils. It can precisely recognize which tag or minifigure is placed at which position on the brick, enabling spatial awareness. What’s more, multiple Smart Bricks can sense each other’s relative positions and rotation angles.

- Airplane Mode: Attach a specific airplane tag to the Smart Brick and it emits turbine engine sounds — even sounding an alarm when you flip the aircraft.
- Captain Announcement: Place a smart pilot minifigure into the cockpit seat and it instantly triggers a crew broadcast.
Small Package, Serious Engineering
To pack complex functionality into a brick measuring just 2×4 studs and 5 plates tall, LEGO developed a custom ASIC chip specifically for this product.
Sensor Suite: The brick integrates a speaker, RGB LED lights, a color sensor, and a 6-axis gyroscope for motion and orientation detection.
Dynamic Feedback: In a racing scenario, the system determines who crosses the finish line first. When you drift through a corner, the sensor triggers tire screeching sounds. A crash produces impact noise.
Minifigure Technology: Smart minifigures and Tags contain passive RFID chips. Through clever engineering, LEGO embedded the electronics while preserving full joint articulation in the minifigures — they move exactly like traditional figures.
Launch Timeline and What Comes Next
The Smart Play System debuts in March 2026 with LEGO Star Wars products. The rollout includes two types of sets: Starter Sets containing the core Smart Brick, and Expansion Sets containing compatible Tags or minifigures to expand the play experience.
Looking ahead, the LEGO Pokémon series — expected in summer 2026 — will adopt Smart Play technology at scale. The wireless charging dock can charge multiple Smart Bricks simultaneously, though it remains unclear whether the dock is included or sold separately.
What stands out most about this announcement is LEGO’s commitment to making the system independent of phone apps. Years from now, even if software support ends, the Smart Play System will continue to function as long as the batteries hold a charge.
